Overview

Seeking a senior-level executive to oversee the transition planning and execution of a new collaboration between Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center including construction of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute free-standing adult inpatient New Cancer Hospital. Reporting to the President/Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, the SVP, Hospital Transformation has responsibility for leading, developing, and executing the planning and start-up of the New Cancer Hospital. This role requires a leader with excellence in collaboration, communication, presentation skills, influence, and the ability to deliver superior execution across large scale, and highly Matrix operations.

The SVP, Hospital Transformation will work closely with the CEO, EVPs and SVPs of both DFCI and BIDMC to ensure the strategic objectives of the New Cancer Hospital are achieved. This individual will manage a $1.6 billion capital budget and build the multi-million-dollar operating budget with eventual oversight of a significant number of direct and indirect FTEs. The SVP, Hospital Transformation must ensure their departments are effectively partnering with all clinical areas (including but not limited to physicians and nurses) throughout DFCI and BIDMC with an overall goal of improved patient satisfaction, high-quality care, and operational efficiency. The SVP, Hospital Transformation will cultivate and sustain a culture that embraces engagement, teamwork, and accountability while exemplifying their areas of responsibility and leadership excellence.

This position will have significatn visibility and involvement with all levels of DFCI and BIDMC executive leadership, trustees, faculty and staff, Patient and Family Advisory Commitee (PFAC), and key stakeholders, including th ose from the city, state, and local neighborhood. Must be highly versed in working in matrixed organizations.

This position's work location is hybrid with two or three days per week remote. The selected candidate may only work remote days from a New England state (ME, VT, NH, MA, CT, RI).

Responsibilities

The following describe the general nature and level of work being performed by this position.

  • Project Management: Directly accountable for the New Cancer Hospital construction project delivery team, including refinement and fulfillment of capital project budget and schedule. The Construction Executive of the New Cancer Hospital will report directly to this position.
  • Change Management/Organizational change readiness
  • Budget Development and Administration: In coordination with Finance, the SVP, Hospital Transformation has overall responsibility for creating and stewarding the New Cancer Hospital operating budget. Conceptualizes and performs a variety of financial analyses. For New Cancer Hospital operation, facilitates effective cost containment practices through monitoring of volume trends, proactive management of capacity (physical and human resource), supplies, service contracts and professional services agreements.
  • Operational Integration: Develops and executes strategies to expand and integrate adult inpatient operating services to ensure seamless transitions of care, including but not limited to access and discharge pathways and processes. Analyzes data to understand the drivers of adult inpatient capacity and uses formulas and modeling to impact more efficient patient throughput Optimizes value by employing data driven decisions to actively engage in process improvement activities that reduce cost and improve revenue.
  • Technology Optimization: Responsible for partnering with Information Services and Data and Analytics teams to assure technology solutions that meet the inpatient service delivery needs. Supports development and implementation of long range plan for clinical information systems migration and adoption.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Partners with Institute leaders to ensure ongoing compliance with jurisdictions having regulatory authority, including acquisition of New Cancer Hospital operating license and related programmatic accreditation start up and maintenance.
  • Management: Creates and maintains relevant metrics and dashboards to display New Cancer Hospital metrics in a meaningful and accessible fashion for stakeholders. Recruits, retains, develops, and provides managerial and administrative oversight of all staff within the responsible areas. Creates an inclusive working environment that supports the ongoing professional growth and development of all staff, high morale, and optimal job satisfaction. Facilities resolution of conflicts and issues that emerge between key stakeholder groups. Provides leadership in the implement of regular staff meetings, in-service training, and continuing education activities for all areas of responsibility. Operates within a matrixed system model whereby the SVP, Hospital Transformation is responsible for overall delivery of adult inpatient clinical and support services in the New Cancer Hospital while partnering with enterprise level service leaders for whom a portion of their portfolios include programs physically in the New Cancer Hospital.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • MBA, MHA, MPH, or equivalent degree required.
  • A minimum of 10-15 years professional experience in hospital operations and management required, preferably in an academic medical center, comprehensive cancer center or health system.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to handle sensitive human resources issues, especially including conflict resolution among and between administrative/clinical leaders, clinical faculty, and other staff.
  • Outstanding organizational skills are necessary to manage many competing timetables and responsibilities.
  • Ability to delegate and effectively supervise and plan for the timely successful completion of short- and long-term objectives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate effectively with a large and diverse constituency, including senior hospital and physician leaders, departmental and division faculty, and support staff, collaborating institution officials, representatives, and vendors.
  • Requires the ability to work independently and to accept responsibility for complex and sensitive decision-making as it relates to the overall conduct of the hospital.
  • Excellent negotiation skills in complex and often sensitive multi-institutional negotiations for agreements and contracts for clinical services and other business relationships.
  • Interpersonal relationship skills needed to manage and motivate others; work with many hospital-wide leaders, administrators, and physicians in a positive and collegial fashion.
  • Ability to work independently and accurately and concisely disseminate information in both written and verbal format.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of commercial construction processes. Project management methodologies, construction strategy, and techniques, and industry best practices. Knowledge of design and construction practices within the local Boston market, including infrastructure for bone marrow transplantation, and major project management experience within the Longwood Medical area preferred.
  • A high level of proficiency and demonstrated effectiveness in problem solving, critical thinking, and implementing new programs related to increased departmental and organizational operating efficiency is required. Excellent interpersonal and consensus building skills are needed to manage a range of individuals, teams, and situations.
  • High stress tolerance.
