Description

The Nurse Assistant assists with direct patient care, including vital signs, personal hygiene, dietary needs, ambulation and positioning of pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations.

Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • CPR required.

Required Skills

  • Must be able to follow directions and to perform independently and work according to department standards when no directions are given.
  • Must be emotionally mature and able to prioritize tasks.
  • Must be able to work in an environment of high stress and assist in the care of the serious to critically ill patients.
  • Must obtain CPR certification within 1 year of employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Demonstrates knowledge, competency and awareness of population served.
  • Answers phone and routes data and/or information received.
  • Delivers and picks up items from other departments, interacts with ancillary departments.
  • Ability to perform bedside blood glucose monitoring with the Accu-Chek Inform II 
  • Processes data for charts, using appropriate chart forms.
  • Makes routine rounds and responds immediately and appropriately to patient inquires and requests.
  • Provides morning care (bath, changing of bed linens, patient comfort measures) and evening care (back rubs, freshening of bed linen and other general care)as necessary.
  • Assist with admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
  • Charts factual data obtained i.e. of patient vital signs, personal hygiene, weight, height and diets.
  • Prepares unit, patient rooms, and patient beds for receiving patient admissions, returning surgical patients, transfer of emergencies.
  • Performs treatment procedures such as enemas, surgical skin preparations and application of ice packs and heat assuring patient comfort.
  • Prepares patients for meals, assist in feeding patient, if necessary, and distributes water and other nourishments according to patient needs and directions of RN or LPN.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by leaving patient rooms in order, reporting equipment that is out of order, cleaning equipment and distributing unit linen.
  • Recognizes and responds to priorities in patient care as assigned.
  • Provides post-mortem care and transport of the body in a safe manner.
  • Performs general care activities for patients in isolation.
  • Collects specimens, labels properly and transports to proper area in timely manner.
  • Assist in care of mouth, teeth, hair, nails and skin giving special attention to pressure points.
  • Assist patient with use of bathroom and/or bedpan as well as ambulation.
  • Assist the patient to ambulate and/or transport to wheelchair or chair in a safe manner, using good body mechanics.
  • Assist in monitoring patients for skin integrity, patients in restraints or at risks for falls.
  • Assist patient/families in CCU according to their needs with directions from the RN.
  • Follows instructions by the RN on how to work around special equipment and multiple lines, tubings, etc.
  • Notify nurse immediately if patient in any distress.
  • Follow instructions on checking often to see what family/visitor needs are and assist them as instructed.
  • Caring for patient and family at the time of death.
