As a Chief of Staff at Heron, you will work closely with the founders on executive operations — namely, any project that is critical for the company overall, but does not fall neatly into a given team.

What you will specifically work on will change week-to-week. Some current or recent projects that we hope a Chief of Staff will help drive alongside a founder, or own outright in the future:

  • Refine and promote the company mission, vision, culture & values
  • Run a function that we have a gap in or we have not hired for yet
    • e.g., recruiting — recruit for high priority roles (such as this one)
    • e.g., product — operate as a product owner for a specific initiative, including owning the product backlog and working with engineers
    • Lead large cross-functional initiatives, such as developing a company-wide compensation & performance framework
    • Run internal meetings, such as bi-monthly company-wide strategy retreats, weekly planning meetings
    • Run a large scale data retrospective with an important customer
    • Scale founders, including basic admin tasks like scheduling when needed (we anticipate less work like this, but it may occur)
    • Assist in fundraising, such as preparing pitch materials and owning the investor CRM
    • Collect + synthesize qualitative and quantitative evidence to make strategic decisions, own projects from ideation to measurable outcomes

      We don’t expect the ideal candidate to have had prior experience with any of the projects above. We believe this role will particularly suit strong generalists with a growth mindset, and who want to learn quickly and make an impact across all parts of a fast growing startup Skills and Qualifications

      We believe a successful Chief of Staff will relate to some of the following actions. If you’re not sure, reach out to us and ask

      • Have a technical background & can solve quantitative problems, for example (but not limited to) majored in a technical degree, worked as a software engineering or a data scientist, comfortable working with data & basic code. Heron is a very technical company, so we believe that even our Chief of Staff should have technical skills
      • Make decisions in a structured and evidence-based way. Break down complex problems into simple components & frameworks
      • Communicate effectively with anyone, from a Heron software engineer to an external investor — this not only includes verbal communication, but also written communication (e.g., strategy memos) and presentations (e.g., investor pitch deck)
      • Analyze data (SQL, spreadsheets), maybe even automate tasks (e.g., python)
      • Own a project from ideation to tangible outcome, ideally within a cross-functional team
      • Execute tasks independently, possess a strong work ethic
      • Learn even unfamiliar areas of the business rapidly
      • Promote an outcome-focused, low-bureaucracy team culture Additional Requirements:
        • This is an in-person role out of our NYC office. All 3 founders love working with each other in-person, and we would love for anyone in this role to work side-by-side with the founders
        • Authorization to work in the United States and willingness to be based in New York City
