Summary

The Gastroenterologist is an integral member of the Surgery Section medical staff. He/she is responsible for performing endoscopy procedures (EGD and Colonoscopy) on patients referred to the Surgery Section by Primary Care and Specialty providers.



Duties

Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Authorized with service agreement.
Contract Buy Out Program: This position may be eligible for the Physician / Provider Contract Buy Out Program (CBOP), which authorizes VHA to buy out service contracts (Locum agreements, loan repayments, sign-on bonus contracts, Physician-owned practices) in exchange for employment at certain rural or highly rural facilities for a period of obligated service (minimum 4 years). Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)
Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performing initial histories and physical examinations on inpatients and outpatients.
  • Providing ongoing outpatient and inpatient care for assigned patients.
  • Screening outpatients to determine need for further care.
  • Prescribing medications within defined scope of practice.
  • Ordering diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKG's).
  • Carrying out health promotion and disease prevention activities.
  • Drawing blood specimens for testing and performing other comparable lab procedures as needed.
  • Initiating and expediting requests for consultations and scheduling special tests and studies.
  • Making interim summaries of the patient's medical record.
  • Dictating history and physicals, admission notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Dictating notes on procedures performed for which the Gastroenterologist is responsible through participating in the care of veteran patients.
  • Starting intravenous lines and administering IV solutions/ medications as needed.
  • Assisting in continuing the surgical program at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center.
  • Providing consultative services in the Emergency Department.
  • Providing education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
  • Providing age appropriate care for the adult and geriatric patient.
  • Assisting with collateral duties within the surgery section.


Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm
