Position Summary:

Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center Emergency Department is currently seeking a dedicated Medical Social Worker II PRN to play a pivotal role in our patient care team. Responsibilities include conducting thorough psychiatric evaluations and substance abuse assessments, ensuring seamless continuity of care for our patients. As a key multidisciplinary team member, you will collaborate closely to deliver high-quality psychiatric services. Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining meticulous documentation in accordance with institutional and state regulations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of Maryland's mental health resources and demonstrate proficiency in developing effective treatment plans. Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Respond promptly to requests from Emergency Department Physicians for psychiatric Consultation.
  • Conduct psychiatric assessments, formulate diagnoses, and collaborate with referring physicians to determine appropriate disposition.
  • Consult with Attending Physicians to ensure medical clearance and discuss reasons for consultation.
  • Communicate assessment results and disposition plans to referring physicians.
  • Review patient charts and obtain necessary insurance authorizations before providing services.
  • Contact insurance providers to secure authorizations required for disposition and document appropriately.
  • Conduct interviews with patients, perform psychosocial assessments, mental status examinations, and review psychiatric history.
  • Communicate with family members or other informants as needed for a comprehensive assessment.
  • Develop suitable treatment and disposition plans for patients.
  • Acquire knowledge of the Mental Health Service System to facilitate optimal clinical disposition.
  • Troubleshoot system issues to ensure timely and clinically appropriate dispositions.
  • Ensure all documentation meets standards for carrying out treatment and disposition plans.
  • Arrange appropriate dispositions for cases and independently resolve complex disposition issues.
  • Maintain awareness of patient flow constraints in the emergency department and adjust pace accordingly.
  • Provide comprehensive sign-out, verbally or in writing, on clinical and disposition status to next shift staff.
  • Collaborate effectively with all members of the Evening/Weekend Emergency Consultation team.
  • Attend all assigned staff and administrative meetings.
  • Foster collegial working relationships with all Emergency Department staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education or an equivalent organization approved by the Council on Social Work Education.
  • Licensure as an LCSW-C is preferred,
  • LMSW may be considered along with appropriate work history.
