Davis, United States UC Davis Genome Center Full time

Reporting to the UC Davis Genome Center Director, the incumbent will be responsible for the day-to-day management and development of computational and bioinformatics resources within the UC Davis Bioinformatics Core Facility. They will provide leadership in coordinating bioinformatics services, ensuring the smooth operation of the Core, and delivering state-of-the-art capabilities to research groups both on- and off-campus. In addition to managing services on a recharge basis, the incumbent will oversee the organization and delivery of workshops and seminars aimed at providing continuing education to local, national, and international audiences. The position requires a high level of knowledge and competence in both hardware and software aspects of bioinformatics, while collaborating closely with faculty members and the Genome Center leadership.

CORE MANAGEMENT (70%)
The incumbent will assume leadership and operational management responsibilities for the Bioinformatics Core Facility within the UC Davis Genome Center, overseeing its role in providing essential bioinformatics support to research groups across the campus.

Responsibilities will include supervising the Core’s data analysts and staff, coordinating training workshops for both on-campus and off-campus users, and developing collaborations with potential Core customers to address client priorities and overall demand.

Financial management duties will entail working closely with the Genome Center’s Director and Chief Administrative Officer to manage the Core's budget, ensuring timely invoicing, revising recharge structures and rates, and monitoring account balances. Budget reports will be prepared for review by the Core’s faculty advisory board and the UC Davis Campus Research Core Facility committee.

The incumbent will lead the Core towards providing state-of-the-art bioinformatics services, maintaining its position at the forefront of analytical approaches. This will involve staying informed about emerging computational techniques, attending relevant conferences, and consulting with stakeholders across the campus.

The role also involves active participation in resource design, budgeting, and long-range planning processes to ensure a technically current computing environment for both the Genome Center and the Bioinformatics Service Core.

Responsibilities also include liaising with other campus components such as the High Performance Computing unit research IT, representing the Genome Center in relevant initiatives, and identifying and developing opportunities for collaboration and infrastructure enhancement.

Additionally, the incumbent will support researchers by contributing to the analytical sections of grant proposals and providing necessary support letters to facilitate collaborative efforts.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE, PROMOTION AND ACTIVITY (20%)
The incumbent will maintain a current knowledge of computational and information technologies relevant to bioinformatics and experimental genomics. This includes staying updated with the latest bioinformatics literature, meeting with visitors, and attending conferences. It is essential to remain informed about cluster-based research computing systems, networks, databases, bioinformatics software, and LIMS systems. The incumbent will assess which bioinformatics methods best suit specific biological research questions and evaluate the preferable implementations of those methods.

In addition to staying current with technological advancements, the incumbent will play a key role in promoting the Core's activities both on and off-campus. This involves proactively identifying new clients, advocating for the Core through presentations, booths at conferences, and participation in scientific societies and meetings. They will also contribute to the development of new core-run courses in bioinformatics and participate as an instructor in existing courses. The incumbent will maintain and update websites related to the Core within the Genome Center's website to showcase its services and resources.

UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (10%)
The incumbent will serve as the bioinformatics liaison to represent the Center on internal and external campus committees, workgroups, and advisory boards, particularly concerning shared computing resources. They will engage in public outreach activities by presenting scientific research results to visitors and providing relevant advice to individuals and public agencies upon request.

In addition to serving as a liaison, the incumbent may participate in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service. They will actively contribute to training courses to teach campus researchers bioinformatics techniques, running multiple courses each year. While there is no formal teaching component to this position, the incumbent's involvement in training courses fulfills an important educational aspect.
