General Summary:

The VP and General Curator oversees animal husbandry operations and programs at Audubon Zoo in support of Audubon Nature Institute. This position is responsible for all aspects of zoological management including, but not limited to, animal welfare, collection planning, supervision of the animal management team, animal acquisition and disposition, regulatory compliance, permitting, exhibit quality, animal training and enrichment, species conservation, deliver outstanding guest interaction and experience. The VP and General Curator is responsible for meeting and exceeding United States Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act standards and Association of Zoos and Aquarium accreditation standards. This position is expected to propose and implement professional best practices in animal management. The VP and General Curator is expected to take an active role in staff safety and staff professional development. This position works actively and collaboratively with all Zoo and Audubon Nature Institute departments and facilities.

To deliver on the Audubon mission, the VP & General Curator will:

Provide a guest experience of outstanding quality.

It is the responsibility of the VP & General Curator to implement the highest welfare standards of animal wellbeing.
The VP & General Curator is responsible for the performance of all curators, keepers and voluntary animal staff.
Candidate must be able to work effectively with minimal supervision and approach all encounters with employees in a friendly, service-oriented manner.
Candidate must maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming, including proper uniform standards, and comply at all times with Audubon standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient operations. Returning telephone messages, faxes and e-mails in a timely fashion is required.
The VP & General Curator maintains the highest standards of staff guidance and feedback, exhibit quality and the guest experience throughout Audubon Zoo.
The VP and General Curator will oversee Audubon Zoo's shoot team.

Enhance the care and survival of wildlife through research and conservation.

The VP & General Curator will oversee the Animal Department.

The above listed duties are general statements of required major duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and continuous basis. They do not exclude other duties as assigned.

To deliver on the Audubon service promise, the VP & General Curator will:

Welcome

Keep unpleasant concerns behind closed doors (vent backstage).

Supervision: Manages the Audubon Zoo Animal Husbandry Staff.

Experience:

A minimum of ten years of leadership experience managing animal care personnel in a zoological facility.
The VP & General Curator must possess a working knowledge and understanding of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) Code of Ethics, AZA Standards for Accreditation and AZA Population Management guidelines.

Education:

The employee must have a four-year degree in zoology, biology, or animal science from a recognized college or university is required. Some experience may be considered in lieu of education on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the VP & Managing Director in consultation with ANI Human Resources staff.

Licensure/Certification:

Must maintain a valid Louisiana driver's license
Professional membership within the AZA is required

Software Requirements:

Proven competency in the application of Microsoft Office, Word, PowerPoint and Excel computer programs is required.

Machinery/Tools/Equipment Requirements:

Must have the ability to use mobile devices, computer, fax, scanner, phone, and copy machine.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to effectively use a personal computer is required.
Extensive experience in a wide variety of animal capture and restraint is required.
Long hours are sometimes required.
Ability to perform physical labor, with demonstrated ability to lift a minimum of 75 lbs. is necessary for the job.

Environmental/Working Conditions:

Evening, weekend, holiday work may be required.
Attendance at staff meetings is required unless excused in advance.
Candidate must maintain regular attendance in compliance with Audubon standards, as required by scheduling which may vary according to the needs of the organization.
The VP & General Curator is required to serve as the leader of Audubon Zoo's Hurricane Team.
All Audubon staff is often called upon to perform facility and exhibit maintenance, including but not limited to, trash and debris removal, floor cleaning, painting, building repair, horticultural duties, etc.
Other associated/related duties are performed as required.
