Durham NC, United States Duke Health Full time

Duke Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences is seeking a dynamic and accomplished individual to lead a high impact speech-language pathology (SLP) program at Duke University Health System. This position is a combined position including the Chief of Speech Language Pathology in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences (HNS&CS) in the Duke School of Medicine () and Co-Chief of the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Duke University Hospital ( ). The successful applicant will hold a regular rank faculty appointment in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communications Sciences.

The Chief is responsible for direct strategic growth of the program, in partnership with the Chair and faculty/staff in the Department, as well as the operational efficiency and coordination of clinical services across all provider sites. Research to improve patient care is a central tenet of the Department, and the successful candidate will have a strong track record of research, portfolio of funded or previously funded projects, and vision for research program building. The Chief is expected to have administrative experience or other demonstration of leadership ability, with a skill-set to manage peers, direct reports and higher-level leadership. The Chief should possess a knowledge of budgets and fiscal accountability so that program budgets can be managed in a sound and responsible manner, in concert with administrative staff.

The Chief of Speech Language Pathology is responsible for the planning, execution, and management of the functions of the Department at our main campus, as well as our satellite locations. The Chief will closely collaborate with the Chair of HNS&CS/Medical Director of Communication Sciences, the VP Ambulatory Services, and the Chief of Audiology, and other inter-professional leadership (e.g., Neurology, Pediatrics) in strategic planning and management of world-class clinical, research and education programs. The Chiefs primary duties will include, but will not be limited to clinical service, human resource management of direct reports and SLP staff, financial management of the SLP program, research and mentoring, strategic planning of clinical and research programs, and professional and community service.

The Chief of Speech Language Pathology will work closely with the Chief of Audiology, Duke University Hospital administration, and with leaders of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences to assure a culture of inclusion that welcomes, mentors and sponsors traditionally under-represented groups within the Speech and Language Pathology work force, administrative staff and leadership. Psychological safety, purpose and belonging are valued goals to ensure that our clinical and research teams deliver the highest value to our patients and the populations that we serve.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • PhD. (or equivalent research doctorate) in Communication Disorders or related field
  • Well-established record of scholarly activity based on peer-reviewed publications and external research support
  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Evidence of exceptional collaborative capabilities and mentoring skills
  • Minimum of 10 years clinical experience as a speech--language pathologist required. Experience with complex medical/surgical patients preferred.
  • American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) and eligibility for North Carolina License for Speech Language Pathology is required
  • Qualified candidates eligible for a faculty position at the Associate Professor or higher in the Duke University School of Medicine based on academic productivity including funded research.

Reporting Structure:

The Chief of Speech Language Pathology will report to the:

  1. Chairman of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences, Duke University School of Medicine, and
  2. Vice President of Ambulatory Services, Duke University Hospital.

Effort Allocation:

50% of this role will be funded by the health system to lead the Speech Language Pathology at Duke University Hospital and clinics, and this will encompass the following:

  • 10-15% effort in direct clinical contact with patients and staff speech-language pathologists and clinical oversight. It is important that the Chief be seen as accessible to staff who look for leadership in the clinical setting. It is also expected that Directors of existing speech pathology programs and the Director of Clinical Operations will report to the Chief of Speech Language Pathology, to assist with scheduling and other day to day management.
  • 15-20% on quality improvement and program development. It is important that the Chief work with Directors of existing speech pathology programs to improve current clinical programs and oversee the development of new programs.
  • 20% effort allocated for administrative duties and clinical strategic planning. The Chief will be expected to lead strategic planning and coordination of clinical services and speech language pathology research program across the health system.

50% of this role will be supported by the Department of HNS&CS and external funding to conduct the candidates own research. Research efforts should be externally funded within 3-5 years, either as the PI or co-I; funding as the PI is expected within 5 years, with subsequent grant submissions to sustain a life-long career as a funded academic clinician investigator. Clinical research, including health services research, is a strength of our program, and a collaborative funding portfolio on the part of the Chief with other faculty, would create a mutually supported research program. Community Engagement is a third pillar of our academic mission that straddles both clinical and research components of the Chiefs responsibilities. The candidate would also serve as a mentor to trainees, junior faculty, and lab members. A strong history of successful mentorship is vital.

The Chief of Speech Language Pathology should be able to lead a program that adheres to the following tenets of the Duke Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences:
